Our Accredited Makeup Course is delivered by international makeup artist, Jay Jay Rauwenhoff.
Jay Jay originally trained in Paris and has worked for over 25 years as a hair and makeup artist. She is a qualified and experienced trainer and assessor and holds the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Makeup School Sydney is a boutique makeup college and Registered Training Organisation specialising in the delivery of Accredited Makeup Courses, incorporating the Nationally Recognised Training unit of competency SHBBMUP002 Design and apply makeup. The school is conveniently located at 128 Castlereagh Street in Sydney’s CBD, across the road from Westfield and David Jones. Our facilities include a studio fully equipped for the makeup industry professional. We devote a lot of time to one-on-one instruction and discussion with each student, and class sizes are small. The founder and teacher at Makeup School Sydney is Paris-trained makeup artist, Jay Jay Rauwenhoff. Jay Jay has 25 years experience as an international makeup artist and has taught over 400 students.
Makeup School Sydney conducted extensive research during the development of our accredited makeup courses. We found that many makeup courses were conducted after business hours and were not accredited. Many ran between 9 weeks and 9 months, and cost between $3000-$9000. Some courses also required students to buy the course’s own brand of makeup with a minimum purchase of $500- $2,500. We concluded that we needed to create a course that was a little different from the others.
Each of the classes at the Makeup School Sydney is intensive and includes theory, detailed demonstrations and many practical exercises. The classes are informative, interesting, challenging and, best of all, really fun! Our Accredited Makeup Course has a defined structure, and we strive to create a learning atmosphere that is pleasant and very friendly.
Students who attend our courses must be 15 years of age or over. We are a NSW GOV Cleared To Work With Children organisation.
Once you have completed Apply and design makeup from Makeup School Sydney, you have the accreditation and skill to work in any area where makeup is required, other than Special FX makeup. There are two different career options in beauty makeup: in the fashion industry, makeup artists prepare models for still photography, TV commercials, magazine and catalogues, fashion events and catwalk shows; and in the wedding makeup industry, where the makeup artist prepares the bride and wedding party for the ceremony. The wedding industry is consistently busy and offers good remuneration for makeup artists. Most makeup artists work in both fashion and weddings. Both require the same knowledge and practice of beauty, hair and makeup. At Makeup School Sydney, Jay Jay also provides information about the fashion industry and advice on how to set up your own makeup business. Graduates of our accredited makeup course can go onto further study including:
Jay Jay offers this opportunity to students after they complete her course.
Graduates are able to request work experience with her and watch her on the job, which provides them a lot of valuable ‘real life’ working experience.
Jay Jay is confident that any attentive student who diligently practices her instructions has the knowledge and qualifications to be able to quickly and confidently make any client look their best.
For that reason, when Jay Jay is unavailable, she happily refers many of her students for work experience opportunities, including makeup for weddings and fashion or film shoots.
We recommend you wear dark clothing to the course, and something you don’t mind getting makeup on. Black is the preferred colour as that is what most professional makeup artists wear.
Yes, you may wear makeup if you wish to, but keep it subtle.
A Model
Students need to supply their own model to practice on during the accredited makeup courses. The model is also required to complete the practical assessment.
Makeup
Makeup School Sydney students may need to buy products to ensure that their makeup kit is appropriately stocked.
Jay Jay recommends the Makeup Starter Kit by Mikatvonk Makeup (co-developed by Jay Jay) consisting of 21 makeup products for only $350.
This represents fantastic value in comparison to other makeup brands that are charging $69 for foundation! Please be aware this is not a compulsory purchase, but it is an optional extra made available to students.
During the 3 week course, Jay Jay recommends students practice a total of 9 hours outside of Makeup School Sydney sessions.
Each student needs to supply their own model to practice on during the accredited makeup courses. The model will also be required to assist the student on the exam day.
Students will need to complete a questionnaire and demonstrate a look of their choice. This look is to be assessed by the teacher and deemed competent to work within the industry. The students are also asked to provide copies of their notes taken during the course, as well as the learner activities from the Training Manual. Jay Jay provides assistance on all of these areas.
